The Manaslu Circuit is a high-altitude trek around Mount Manaslu (8,163 m) in north-central Nepal. The route follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley from its lower hills into a remote mountain landscape before crossing Larkya La at around 5,106 metres and descending toward the Manang side.

What makes this journey distinctive is the gradual change in both landscape and culture. The lower trail passes through warm valleys, forests and riverside settlements. Farther north, the valley becomes drier and more alpine, with Tibetan-influenced villages, dramatic mountain walls and wider views of Manaslu.

The trek requires good physical preparation, particularly for the higher sections and the Larke Pass crossing. It is also a restricted-area trekking route, so permits and the required trekking arrangements need to be organized before starting.

Where Is the Manaslu Circuit?

The route lies in north-central Nepal, around Mount Manaslu and within the Manaslu Conservation Area.

The journey generally begins in the lower Budhi Gandaki Valley and follows the river upstream. As the trail gains elevation, the surroundings change considerably. Forested hills give way to steep mountain walls, narrower valleys and eventually the high alpine landscape around Samagaon and Samdo.

The northern part of the route also has a strong Tibetan cultural influence. Villages, monasteries, architecture and traditional ways of life become an important part of the experience as you move higher into the valley.

After crossing Larkya La, the landscape changes again as the trail descends toward Dharapani and connects with the wider Annapurna region.

What Is the Manaslu Circuit Like?

The appeal of the Manaslu route lies in how naturally the landscape changes from one section to the next.

The lower Budhi Gandaki is greener and warmer, with terraced hillsides, forests and river crossings. Higher up, the valley becomes increasingly rugged. Around Namrung and Samagaon, mountain views become more prominent, while the area beyond Samdo feels distinctly alpine.

This gradual transition is one of the reasons the trek feels like a journey through several different mountain environments rather than one continuous landscape.

The cultural side is equally significant. Settlements in the upper valley have strong Tibetan influences, and the pace of life becomes noticeably different from the lower villages.

By the time you reach Larkya La, the focus shifts toward the physical challenge of crossing the pass and then descending toward the Manang side.

How High Is the Manaslu Circuit?

There are two elevations worth keeping separate.

Mount Manaslu is 8,163m high, making it the eighth-highest mountain in the world.

The highest point reached during the Manaslu Circuit trek is Larkya La, at approximately 5,106m.

For trekkers, the pass is therefore the more relevant figure. Reaching this elevation requires a gradual approach and sensible acclimatization. The challenge is not simply the height itself; several consecutive days of trekking at increasing elevations can also affect energy and recovery.

How Difficult Is the Manaslu Circuit?

The Manaslu Circuit is a demanding high-altitude trek, but its difficulty is not based on technical climbing.

The main factors are the length of the journey, repeated trekking days, increasing elevation and the Larkya La crossing. The remote nature of parts of the route also means that trekkers should be prepared to walk in changing conditions with limited facilities at higher elevations.

You do not need mountaineering experience for the circuit, but good endurance and sensible altitude preparation are important.

How Long Does the Manaslu Circuit Take?

The duration depends on where the trek begins and ends, the acclimatization plan and the transport arrangements used before and after the walking sections.

Most itineraries allow enough time to progress gradually from the lower valley to the higher settlements before crossing Larkya La. Additional days may be useful for acclimatization or flexibility in case of weather or trail conditions.

Rather than looking only at the total number of days, it is worth considering how those days are distributed. A well-paced itinerary should give you time to adjust to altitude without making the trek unnecessarily rushed.

When Is the Best Time for the Manaslu Circuit?

Spring and autumn are the main trekking seasons.

Spring generally brings good trekking conditions and developing mountain views, while autumn follows the monsoon and is widely used for high-altitude trekking.

The monsoon months can make lower sections wetter and affect trail conditions. Winter brings colder temperatures and can create more difficult conditions around Larkya La.
